That's one of my photos taken at the Pyrenees. The sign reads in French: "Attention. Zone de tir au vol", which means (correct me if it sounds strange) "Caution. Zone for shooting on the wing." That brown horse in the middle facing the camera seems to ask: "What wings?"

Gothic Window in Roncesvalles

My photo of a pointed window of Collegiate Church of Santa María de Orreaga / Roncesvalles, Northern Spain. The church was built in the thirteenth century but it has underwent many reforms including the facade where this window is located.

Canoe Slalom

Today's signages are actually numbered gates in whitewater slalom. They're colored as either green (downstream) or red (upstream), indicating the direction they must be negotiated. Photos taken at Barcelona 92 Olympic co-host city la Seu d'Urgell (Catalonia). Anyone trying it out?

Two years ago I visited some relatives staying in Sant Vicenç Hotel Spa, in Catalonia, not far from my home. I couldn't enjoy relaxing baths but loved its calm surroundings.

Street Artworks At Guggenheim Bilbao

Five years ago I was lucky enough to visit the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum — or Museoa, in the Euskara language, for it is set in the Basque Country, Spain — of modern art. I wish I had had my digital camera at that time, but luckily the web is full of beautiful images. The outside of the Guggenheim Bilbao is much more impressive than its interior. Outside there are several bridges and stairs that allow good views of Frank Gehry's building, which is its most obvious attraction:

The building is made of interconnecting volumes, some of them limestone-coated shapes clad in a titanium surface resembling fish scales, linked by class walls.

On the outside there is also a square with two great artworks. One, the "Spider" by French-American artist and sculptor Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), has been exhibited in many cities all over the world. It is actually named "Maman" and is ment to represent motherhood. I hope you can bear giant spiders!:

But my favourite artwork is the sculpture of a dog covered with live flowers by Jeff Koons, called "Puppy", which was to be temporary but due to its popularity they decided to leave it there permanently. There is a gardener who takes care of it every day, and plants on it different flowers during the year.

Signposted Walks

Bilingual poster (Spanish and Basque) for signposted walks in the way of Plaza Beunza and around the Irabia reservoir, northern Navarre, Spain. Photo taken last Summer.

The poster was quite informative, but my favourite signages were small signposts in the middle of the forest along the way, like the one below.

A Good Hearth

I have no new outdoor images to show because the weather is too bleak, foggy and very wet. My family and I enjoyed this hearth last weekend in a country house and believe me if I say it's the best view we had.

After making a little editing for fun I got a sort of drawing that will be my contribution to "That's my world". If the weather does not improve in the coming days, I think a radiator will be my next photo!

The Abelia

Thanks to Xavi, blogger from Jardins-parcs-paisatges-muntanyes-ciutats (Gardens, parks, landscapes, mountains, cities. What an enjoyable name for a blog) now I know this flower's name: it's the Abelia floribunda. It is always good to know the name of the plants growing in your family's garden. The thing is that I took that first photo some months ago and today I looked at that corner of the garden again and instead of lovely abelia found this:

I do not know for sure but I think this is the abelia hibernating. Either that of I photographed the back plant. I have much to learn in botany!

A Gloomy Excursion

I still have a few pictures of last Summer left to show. These three belong to the excursion to the caves of Zugarramurdi, Navarre.

This is the so called Río del Infierno, river of hell. Besides being dark, it dug the gloomy caves.

The cave itself. The river did a good job the last milleniums.

Once you're out, the surroundings are warming.

Two Gifts: Bracelet and Champagne Flute

These are my last purchases. Not that I am thinking of Christmas presents in August, although I was tempted. Both of them are Birthday gifts for two of my relatives. The first one of these relatives, born on September, is allergic to silver and trinkets, so the choice is always simple: plated gold.

It is made by Monica Vinadier and named Fiji bracelet - chocolate. The adjustable silk cord ensures the right size, this is why I finally chose this one. They already sent me the bracelet properly presented in its box and a little bag.

The second relative is allergic to black wine and is crazy for champagne. So, in her 70th Birthday, she will have a new champagne flute:

I'm still waiting for the flute to arrive but I suppose it will come in the matching gift box on the image. Made by Dartington, it is called Ormollu and it is really affordable, about $20. It is handmade and just hope it will survive the dishwasher. In Amazon, you can find this flute in six colours, and also the link to Monica Vinadier Jewelry.

I also bought at Dartington a Real Ale Tankard for a third relative who is not allergic to anything, much less beer.

Upcoming Project

I have several digital drawings waiting for a bit of redesigning and I wish it was easier to find the right path... OK, I make them just for fun, but even so I can't decide to open the image editor. The task, right now, consists in polish up these fellows, make a brand new face for all of them or, even better, choose only one and stick with it. I made them some time ago for a short movie and I didn't take the trouble to draw them neatly because the movie would not be much accurate anyway. I'll show you that short (really short) film one of these days.

Oh, and I changed the blog template again. This time I went minimal, so I guess you were lucky :) Have a nice day!

Summer Activities: Designing Mugs!

This is my latest drawing, in two different colours. Can you guess what I did with it? For a long time, I've been wanting to join CafePress, one of those print-on-demand websites where you can design your own t-shirts, postcards, gifts, and even publish books and CD. So, now that I have more time, I took my little drawing and went to CafePress to start my own projects. See my two first "creations":

It's so much fun, and this is just the beginning! Come visit my new store on CafePress, it's just a little site and there's nothing more than these two mugs by now, but I'm planning to add more things. For instance, there's a stationery section that's really interesting.

A Sketch By Me

I've been snooping around and posting other people's sketches and drawings, but what about my own drawings? Today you can judge for yourself. It is not the tidiest drawing in the world... Anyway, this is my interpretation of US playwright Sam Shepard. I got interested in his work after reading True West. It turns out he is also an actor and TV and film director.

I would like to use my amateur pencil more often. He looks severe, but I enjoyed making the drawing.

Peter Paul Rubens, Recto And Verso

As I promised, I've been looking for more sketches. This time, all of them were made by Peter Paul Rubens.

The recto or front of the first sheet depicts three groups of apostles and two sketches all related to a representation of the Last Supper.

It amazes me that the artist used the same sheet to draw such different themes: Medea, taken from the ancient Greek legend, and the Christian Last Supper. You can see thanks to the stains that the artist turned the sheet upside down when making the second drawing.

The verso, or reverse side of the page, as I said, shows some studies of Medea and her children. I haven't found the actual picture by Rubens in which this version of Medea would have been included; I guess it does not exist, but who knows.

I have chosen this other sketch because of its contemporary and very abstract look. It does not look like a Rubens at all! In fact, it shows an early stage of the process into the painting of a Virgin adored by saints that nowadays is in Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine arts.

On the reverse there is a more classical study, in all senses. Rubens made it as a young man on his first trip to Rome. It is a drawing of the Belvedere Torso, a fragment of a male statue dating to the first century B.C. signed by Apollonios. Below: the statue, the Last Supper, and an Ascension of the Virgin, also by Rubens, related to the sketch of the Virgin and the saints.

Preparatory Drawings

Today I have been exploring online some works of art on display at museums. There are many drawings made by well-known artists in preparation for their paintings that I enjoy watching since I saw the Caprichos by Goya at the Prado Museum, Madrid, some years ago. The following drawings can be found at The Getty website. (Once into the website, I followed this "path": The Getty > Museum > Explore art > Types of art > Drawings > Preparatory Studies.)

Giovanni Battista TIEPOLO (Italy, 1725 - 1735)

They say perhaps this Holy Family by Buonarroti is the most notable work in the Getty collection.

Leonardo DA VINCI ( Italian, about 1503 - 1506)

Studies for the Christ Child with a Lamb  

Pen and brown ink and black chalk.  8 1/4 x 5 9/16 in.

In this study, Da Vinci drew a child and a lamb several times. He started with the drawing on the top right and, lastly, he drew the more elaborate study at the bottom left. He probably made the drawing in preparation for a painting now lost.

You can see some notes unrelated to the drawing at the top of the sheet in his characteristic backwards writing, legible only with the help of a mirror. Click on the images to see them larger.

I found more drawings to share, some of them accompanied with the paintings that came after. I will try and post them soon.

Art Books

The past few days, when I looked for art books to post on my other blog, I found such an amount of great and unique pieces that I just needed more posts to share them. The following pictures come from Marina Soria's site.

First, a book entitled Cultivating Friendship that was made to mark the 50th birthday of the customer's partner. It contains personal letters from friends and a selection of flowers taken from their personal garden. It is wrapped in strech fabric with the oriental style.

Then, another custom book which is an autobiography that collects all the original photos of the owner's childhood along with parts of extracts of her memoirs:

And the last book of this series, entitled Family Ties, with the following text:

First Tree

This is the first animated tree I have ever made. Well, in fact, I have done only two animated trees, the second one being posted here. This first one was too much ambitious from my part, and all the work I made goes almost unnoticed in just a few seconds, but I still remember the fun while I discovered I was able to create such videos. I hope you like it, but I must warn you: do not blink, or you will not see the half of it!

Buranovskiye babushki

This year's Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest will be held on May 29 at Oslo, Norway, and several countries are currently choosing their entries. Some of them are internally designed by the TV channels, but a lot are competing in National Finals in which both a jury and the votes sent by televiewers through their phones decide who will represent their country in the big contest.

Since my favourite country, Andorra, won't be able to send its entry (which is always sung in Catalan) due to the financial crisis, I have to find my preferred performers among those finals. This year, so far, the most brilliant NF was, in my opinion, the Russian one, although I do not like the winning entry at all (you can watch it here). Instead, I enjoyed some performances like the one in the video. All I can say is that these women are, as a Youtube commenter stated, like a fresh air. They got third in the Russian final, a 25 entries contest, and I think they already won half the world. Enjoy!

Birthday Season

March is the month for birthdays at my home, and I fear I've got the "Santa Claus" syndrome. This year I've bought this necklace to my sister and I'm really happy with it. At least, I'm happy now, before giving it to her. It's quite impossible to find something *appropriate* for her, but I can't resist the temptation to try it time and again, sometimes just to see that look on her face... This time I did it well though, and this piece suits her perfectly, it's just her style. She will have to melt in front of me!

I bought it at BoBijou, and they sent it in a box with the amazing wrapping below. My sister does not like pink at all, so I suppose I'll see that look while she opens the box anyway. It will be funny.

A Tree In Progress

This is my homemade tree, drawn with Illustrator. When I ended it, I saved two copies of it and I started erasing the brushes on one of them. Every fifteen or twenty erasures I saved a new image, untill I had seventy images and the whole process of the drawing. Then I composed a video with a movie maker program, in which every drawing is converted in a 0,3 seconds photogram.

It is something surprisingly easy to do at home with an average computer, the only important thing being to organize well the images, although I learned to make this sort of videos in a trial and error process. So far I've made about four animations, two of them as personalized gifts to a child. Sometimes they are a bit laborious but always fun!

Van Gogh in London

Today, Saturday 23th January, the exhibition The Real Van Gogh. The Artist and His Letters opens at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Its aim is to take us inside the artist’s mind and try to turn the myth of the “red-haired madman”. The convincing proofs in this exhibition are the paintings themselves, like the one above, where we can see the letter in which his brother Theo communicated his marriage. Van Gogh feared losing his allowance due to this wedding, and this letter was the cause of the cutting of the ear. Therefore, he himself painted a justification for that.

Van Gogh attracts the masses and, undoubtedly, the exhibition will be successful. However, it doesn’t include hits like the sunflowers or the starry night, but forty letters, sixty-five remarkable paintings and thirty drawings. The curators have had interest in establishing a correlation between the paintings and his letters, all of which we can read at www.vangoghletters.org, and focusing on his ethic at work and his perseverance. Their thesis is that Van Gogh’s work is not the product of disease but of genius.

The exhibition, that was first held in Amsterdam, will be open in London until next April 28th.

The swiss writer Robert Walser (1878-1956) was introduced by his brother, the painter Karl Walser, in the Berlinese art world, he soon visited exhibitions in Bern and Zurich and wrote about painting.

Yesterday, at the bookstore where I usually go, I leafed through a compilation of texts by Robert Walser on painting. He didn’t show academic, since he believed that art is the unquestioned realm of liberty. He wrote about the paintings by Titian, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Renoir and Cezanne, among others, in a few imaginative proses that sometimes are strict, and sometimes more playful. I could note down this quote from the book (that was too expensive for me):

Walser knew that literature and painting agreed on something basic: the pictorial and literary creation are in a daydream. BERNHARD ECHTE.

Laurie Maitland • Fluent Harmonies

I think I could browse for weeks the abstract contemporary art prints featured in Easyart. These ones were made by Laurie Maitland (UK, 1969). What amazes me of Maitland is that she especialized in set design in her English and Drama degree, and she's also working in her first novel.

As regards her art works, they have a unique fluency and they're full of dynamic stains that to me are like a live handwriting in the water, which gets involved in that movement. These works are usually entitled with musical terms such 'symphony', so the author gives us a hint of what to see in her abstractions. To interpret them and enjoy them is up to us though, and I wish I knew your thoughts on pieces like the one below, "Fire".
